Native Window: Kansas Members Show the Point Of a New Return
Native Window is a side project formed by most of the musicians from the present-day line-up of the rock band Kansas: Phil Ehart (drums), Richard Williams (guitars), David Ragsdale (violin), and Billy Greer (vocals/bass). The project does not include Kansas vocalist, Steve Walsh, however.
Kansas' history is long and complicated. Native Window's is not. Native Window is purely a project; a project set to release a create energy that has nothing to do with the iconic sound of Kansas. It was a way for most of the members of the band Kansas to release another type of musical expression.
The following is an interview with Phil Ehart (above, far left) and Richard Williams (above, second from right). And, to note, Phil and Steve are the only members of Kansas that have been on every Kansas album and every Kansas tour.
POWERLINE A.D.: Isn't it kind of ironic that the two members of Kansas that have been on every album and every tour have gone outside the band to fulfill their creativity?
Phil Ehart: It's about time. Everybody else (in Kansas) has done it. (laughter) Richard and I were due. It was our turn.
POWERLINE A.D.: Have you thought of doing solo work before?
Richard Williams: When I see the torture those other guys go through, to do it all themselves, and results are far from satisfying, it's a lot easier to go into it as a team.
POWERLINE A.D.: Did Steve Walsh want to get involved
Phil: Well, this is the four of us without Steve. It's our group solo attempt. He was basically informed. We went to his house and told him that this is what we were going to be doing and he thought it was great and he wished us the best, If we had invited Steve then it would have been Kansas, so... It just didn't make any sense.
POWERLINE A.D.: Well, did you think of it as first being a Kansas album?
Phil: No. Not even close.
Richard: That's just a different can of worms all together.
POWERLINE A.D.: So Walsh wasn't upset at all about this decision?
Phil: There was no reason to be. He's happy with what he's doing with his family and performing Kansas dates. He's always made it known that he's happy singing in Kansas, (but) as far as writing anything, he told me many times "I'm done." So it's a non-issue. What you and I are saying right now has already been a discussion Steve and I had. A non-issue.
POWERLINE A.D.: Do you think there will ever be another Kansas album?
Phil: Sure. Could be.
POWERLINE: Because when I see a classic rock concert, I want to see and hear — as a fan — the band's most popular songs ...
Richard: As does everybody.
Phil: Who doesn't, you know?
POWERLINE A.D.: ..and when a classic rock band comes out with new material, the fans ...
Phil: Nobody cares. They go and buy t-shirts as soon as the band plays a new song.
POWERLINE A.D.: Exactly.
Richard: That is the reality of it.
POWERLINE A.D.: I saw the same thing when I went to see the Who on their last tour. No one was into the new material.
Phil: Nobody is. The only guys into it are the guys in the band. And the only reason we can say that is because we've done it ourselves. 'We've got a new album!' 'Who cares?! Play "Carry On Wayward Son."' So we understand.
Richard: We've kind of made peace with that.
Phil: So stepping out of Kansas allows us to do this and not have the Kansas moniker — this huge gorilla — on our back.
POWERLINE A.D.: Did you ask Kerry (Livgren, ex-Kansas guitarist and songwriter) to take part in this?
Phil: No. This has nothing to do with Kansas. I can save you all these questions. (laughter) And you've got to remember, Kerry has not been a member of the band for over 25 years. So, I mean, how long does he have to be gone... he's just not going to be involved. This has nothing to do with Kansas other than this is the band that opens for Kansas when they play. This has nothing to do with Steve, nothing to do with Kerry.
POWERLINE A.D.: I was just curious if you had thought of asking Kerry to contribute...
Phil: Why? This has to do with the four of us creating this project. We haven't asked Kerry to do anything other than show up for guest spots for 25 years. Kerry's gone. He doesn't want to be a part of it. So it's the four of us.
POWERLINE A.D.: I've heard you had a hard time choosing the name of the band, Native Window?
Phil: Well, it was hard to find anything.
Richard: What name isn't taken? Unless you stood two or three names together with no correlation to one another.
Phil: We came up with names but as soon as we put it into Google it popped up as a band on MySpace. And we finally found Native Window out of the Vista program. You turn on your computer and it brings up your home window, that's your native window. And we thought, well, that kind of fits. That's a new page and this is a new page, for Kansas, called Native Window, stepping out.. it kind of fit, and it wasn't taken, so we jumped on it.
POWERLINE A.D.: Has a nice correlation to Kansas, too. I don't think a lot of people realize what the name Kansas means, besides it being a name of a state. It's a Native American word...
Phil: People of the south wind. But that had nothing to do with that. It was just two words that weren't taken.
POWERLINE A.D.: Native Window opens up for Kansas on tour, is that exhausting or exhilarating?
Phil: It was great.
Richard: Some question marks on people's faces, for the people who haven't heard it yet.
Phil: No Kansas songs and nothing familiar.
Richard: Who are these guys and why are they hear, and why do they look like Kansas guys? But that's okay.
Phil: But that will pass, too.
POWERLINE A.D.: Native Window's music is different than Kansas. Even though there is a violin, there are no keyboards...
Phil: That was on purpose. We really wanted to run as far away from Kansas as we could possibly get. But you can't run away from yourself. So Richard still plays guitar and I play drums. But if it wasn't a departure, why do it? You might as well do Kansas. Let's go over here and do something we haven't done. And ... to say it doesn't remind you of Kansas is a compliment. We worked very hard not to sound like that.
POWERLINE A.D.: And the songwriting is pretty upbeat and positive.
Phil: Unlike Kansas. (laughter)
POWERLINE A.D.: It seems likely, however, that the Kansas fans will accept it.
Phil: They started to, yeah.
Richard: Some will. Some won't. Some want Kansas, and some want old Kansas. They want Kerry and Dave (Hope, ex-bassist) back in the band, and Robbie (Steinhardt, ex-violinist), and they want us to write Leftoverture Pt. II. And those people want this record to be a new Kansas record, and they just can't believe it's not. And that's fine, but it wasn't intended to be.
Phil: We've been very upfront about that from the beginning.
POWERLINE A.D.: But, you know, as a fan myself, I'm guilty of the same thing. Not so much obsessing over certain members being in the band but..
Richard: That's really in our nature.
Phil: It's really hard to not sound like the band you sounded like for the last 35 years. The minute I start to play my instrument, I start to go right into the K word and I have to remind myself, I'm not playing that. I'm playing this.
You have to remember, too, we're Kansas fans also. We like what we do and what we've done. It's not like we've done something different because we hated what we've done. It was just like, let's take a shot...
Richard: Let's do something else. Why not?
Phil: It's not like we're unhappy, tortured souls being in Kansas. We're the driving force behind it. Happy to be there and happy to have it.
POWERLINE A.D.: When you wrote the songs for Native Window you practiced and arranged everything accoustically, is that correct?
Phil: Yes, we did. We sat in a circle and worked.
POWERLINE A.D.: How did that make the songwriting better? Did it just come naturally?
Richard: It focused on the song.
Phil: Listened to the lyrics, listened to the voice. And it transferred over well, electrically. And, we said up front, everyone's gonna be equal. Everyone contributed equally to what we were doing. It wasn't really one guy who did more than anybody else.
POWERLINE A.D.: Is it any different than when you write with Kansas?
Phil: Oh yeah.
Richard: Completely.
Phil: Kansas was ... usually Kerry came in when he wrote something and it was 90% done.
POWERLINE A.D.: Will Native Window ever break away from Kansas and headline on its own?
Phil: We don't want to focus on Native Window headlining. It's not what we set up to do. Kansas is the main focus. Native Window is the hobby.
Richard: Not that we're not serious about it. But still, we're not gonna quit our day job.
